
Some SoundFonts will have a cheesy old school sound that is pretty outdated for modern electronic music. It can be as simple as a new wavetable instrument set or even as complex and in-depth as the vocals for a song. This file format has a wide range of sonic possibilities. Think of the MIDI notes as the “letters” and the audio as the “new look”. Similarly, they're used to select different types of audio modulated by midi notes. In some ways, this file format is a lot like text typing fonts.Ī text font will take the words and phrases inputted into a computer and give it a new look. You will always see SoundFonts in PCM format, which is a specific file format that allows the SoundFonts to be read by sample-based MIDI synths. Kontakt and DirectWave can totally do more, but in 90% of cases, Soundfont can do enough.SoundFonts are a file format that uses sample-based synthesis to play MIDI files.ĭeveloped in the early 1990s by E-mu Systems and Creative Labs, its first use was on the Sound Blaster AWE32 an ISA sound card that supported some of the first MIDI configuration. So, in the same way that SoundFonts were the poor man's sampler back in the day, they remain the poor man's sampler today. Now, just because newer, better things have arrived like Kontakt, which is not free, or DirectWave, which is not free, Soundfont doesn't suddenly stop being relevant, because it can still do all of that shit, but is free. And after the SoundBlaster Live came in, it even supported unlimited RAM size, which really burned the dudes who had bought AKAI samplers. It supports multiple samples across key ranges, pitch shifting, envelopes, and even 2 FX modules. But the thing is, even though it is very, very old, Soundfont has most of the basic features of a modern sampler like Directwave or Kontakt. But if you were a poor kid, you had a SoundBlaster AWE32, and you used Soundfonts instead.

Back in the day, all the rich kids had AKAI samplers that cost the same as a car. It is an ancient yet powerful sample format. You know what you have? An utterly badass TB-303.Īnd then you import it into DirectWave. And then, using MSB/LSB MIDI code, you throw a Lowpass filter on it, ramp the resonance up, and fuck with the cutoff.

You can think of it like FL Studio's "Edit events in piano roll", except there was no GUI and you had to enter every event by hand as text.īUT THE POINT IS, you used this janky old system to do some baller FX, which were sometimes atmospheric, and sometimes fucking fundamental - for example, you could switch one of the FX units to be a lowpass filter, which was a HUUUUUUGE deal because this shit comes from a time BEFORE Vst plugins were a thing. Using LSB and MSB codes (which are beyond the scope of this comment), you could edit every parameter of the FX modules.

We edited our sequences raw, literally as a list of code. I am of the school of old, who used SoundFonts on a Soundblaster AWE32 card back in the day, with a colossal 8MB of RAM! Back then, we had no wimpy automation clips.
